A PROGRAM FOR TRANSFORMATION, REFLECTION, AND RENEWAL

Welcome to the second annual virtual Power Trip Well-Being and Leadership Experience for Women Superintendents and District Leaders. It’s designed to be all about YOU—and designed to help you connect with peers. Like the 2019 and 2021 Power Trips at Lake Austin Spa Resort, we hope that the time you spend with us will not only address the professional development themes important to you, but also weave in the attention to emotional, spiritual, and physical self-care often overlooked by women at the top of the leadership pyramid.

Be an Inspired Warrior

Have you been through a lot in your life (or just in the past year)? Do people tell you that you are incredibly strong while remarking on the challenges you have had to face? If so, this is a good time to learn what it means to develop true strength and live as an inspired warrior. As Winston Churchill famously said, "If you are going through hell, keep going."

Strategic Foresight: What it Means for Leaders to be Futurists

We are in the midst of a global inflection point. In our quest for certainty, how do we move beyond feeling merely “prepared” and instead be equipped with the literacies to notice unfolding trends, embrace ambiguity, and utilize bold imagination to create radically different futures? What might the world look like in a few years? How do we shape ourselves and the system we live in to ensure a more equitable future? If we are going to move forward toward more just futures, we need to be futurists. Get ready to dream big and build boldly as we retire old ideas, embrace new truths, and design new ways of being that will help each of us thrive in an unpredictable and changing world.

Embrace Your Wobbles

No matter what we do in life, we will experience wobbles! Here, wobbles are considered to be any challenges to our mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual lives. Drawing from essays in her book of the same name, Shumway shares the wisdom of yoga teachers and practitioners in accepting— and even being grateful for—the wobbles they experience both on and off the yoga mat. This session will challenge attendees to become more aware of their habitual—often unconscious— approach to managing wobbles. (No yoga experience is required)

Mattering, Meaning and Making an Impact

Research shows that feeling like you matter at work and in the world isn’t just “nice to have.” It’s a fundamental human need and is critical for motivation, fulfillment, and well-being. Enabling meaningful work is also a skillset that leaders can learn. In this session, we will understand how to make people feel noticed, affirmed, and needed every single day; discover the key ingredients for meaningful work and why they’re vital for well-being; and learn how to create a culture of mattering. We were born to make an impact, and there is no greater impact that we can make in the world than helping other human beings understand their value and significance.

Stewarding Students into the Future with Curriculum Codesign

Students of color need a curriculum that embraces their mathematical brilliance, cultivates identity, and highlights contributions of people who look like them. But that is not what we get in most math classrooms today, which is why we recruited educators, students, and parents from across the United States to codesign a new math curriculum to push against the status quo. Join Twana Young, Vice President of Curriculum and Instruction at MIND Research Institute, to learn about the codesign process and get a glimpse of this innovative approach to curriculum.

Learning the Language of Science and Closing the Equity Gap in STEM

While STEM careers are expanding rapidly, students historically marginalized by education systems are underrepresented in these fields. If districts and educators don’t provide students with tools designed to promote equity and access, this gap will only continue to grow. To be successful in science, students need to learn a completely new language. This presentation explores the critical role of language within STEM learning and showcases how digital tools can support students to learn the language of science, increasing their engagement, confidence, and interest in STEM.
